Things I never expected to do

Posted on January 10th, 2013 at 0:23 by John Sinteur in category: Great Picture, personal

And 38 cubic meters of concrete later (just close of 50 cubic yards for you non-metric folks) I poured my first foundation.

Not for myself, but for a friend who happens to be contractor in Curacao, helping him out while he’s away…

  1. A fine job! Clearly no frost where you guys live…What is the smaller, deep hole for?

  2. Drainage system.

  3. Congrats! Nice to see that it’s moving forward!

  4. That’s quite a tan you’ve got there, John… ๐Ÿ˜‰
I hope you did remember to put in some hoses underneath the foundation for a nice and quiet water-cooling PC setup.

  5. Jim, it’s not going to be mine when it is finished ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Thanks for this posting. I already wired 10.000.000 euro to John as a present, but, luckily, I was just able to alter the destination to the EFF.

  2. EFF
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    EFF may refer to:
    The Effective Federal funds rate
Electronic Frontier Foundation, a U.S. non-profit advocacy group
Elf Fantasy Fair, a fantasy event in the Netherlands
Economic Freedom Fund, a U.S. political organization
Equipped for the Future, a U.S. non-profit adult literacy project
Election Fighting Fund, a UK fundraising organisation in the 1910s
Ethiopian Football Federation, the governing body of football in Ethiopia
    Evergreen Freedom Foundation, a U.S think-tank
European Fisheries Fund, a fund allocated by the European Union (see Structural Funds and Cohesion Funds)
DC Environmental Film Festival, a festival held annually in Washington, DC
    Eff may refer to:
The English spelling of the letter F
A euphemism for the word fuck

  3. i donate in honor of the EFF most of the time.

  4. Well, I am sure Desiato meant the Ethiopian Football Federation.

  5. EFF – Extra Funny Faces
    Exceptionally Fantastic Fries
Jokes aside, I make an automatic contribution monthly to the EFF and Linux Foundation.

  6. I tried to donate to find that my US credit card has been refused by EFF. (The bank says it`s OK, they can see the transactions but they get cancelled immediately). Will try to get EFF to process electronic money.

  7. Everybody: thank you for a great birthday present!

This is where I had dinner last night…

  1. Hook’s Hut is no more?

  2. Nope – Pirate Bay is the new name for the same place.

  3. Of course!
Hook’s hut was copyrighted by Disney!!1!

  4. Do they serve a torrent of seafood? Or is the food distributed peer to peer without servers?

I was thinking there might be a reason for the light posting.

  5. Well, they do server some mighty nice seafood, but they’re still working with servers. Also, there’s no sign they are being blocked by Dutch ISP’s yet, so the Stichting Brein is failing here as well.

20 or better

Posted on January 27th, 2010 at 17:23 by John Sinteur in category: personal, Software

On Amazon, a product with one single 5 star review is rated higher than a product with 200 reviews an average 4.5 star rating.

Is that product with just one reciew better? I don’t think so, so on 20orbetter.com, I only list products that have at least 20 reviews to their name. Amazon doesn’t let you filter based on the number of reviews, so this is filling a gap left by Amazon.

There’s a few features I still want to add – but I’d love some feedback as well. Do I need to add a full-text search? Anything else?

EU to sue Britain over Internet privacy

Posted on April 14th, 2009 at 14:36 by John Sinteur in category: personal, Privacy

The European Union started legal action against Britain on Tuesday for not applying EU data privacy rules that would restrict an Internet advertising tracker called Phorm from watching how users surf the Web.

The regulators also warned that they could force social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace to hide minors’ profiles from search engines.

The European Commission said Britain should outlaw Internet traffic interception and monitoring unless users give explicit consent that their behavior can be tracked and analyzed.

Vanmiddag even de Vodafone winkel binnen gelopen.

  1. John, I will be frank. Those message in dutch are a pain.

1- your public is mostly english speaking
2- a dutch language message pushes me (and most of us I think) to open an online translator ad convert it to english or to ours native language… often getting the meaning but with a few funny results in the middle ๐Ÿ™‚
3- I understand the category “personal”, but
3a- if you write it on the blog, it is no more personal
3b- most of them are not strictly personal issues
3c- they are often interesting too.
4- this message in particular quite hit the target; I had the same problems in my country with two national providers (solved with vodafone too)

  2. Thank you for being this honest with me ๐Ÿ™‚

KPN praat met Apple over iPhone

Posted on May 27th, 2008 at 14:41 by John Sinteur in category: personal

Well, this time the bad news is personal. My car was wrecked today.

I was at the tail end of a bunch of cars, standing still in lots of traffic on the left lane of the off-ramp of the A4 (Google Maps) when somebody didn’t quite get it that there was quite an amount of traffic, and hit the back of my car.

So now I’m waiting the damage assessment, and we’ll see what the insurer says about that, the car might be totalled.

And the car did exactly what it is supposed to do in a situation like this: protect me. Right now I’ve got nothing – no scratch, pain, neck cramp or whatever.

Write a comment

  1. But you do feel some vague pain in your neck, don’t you? ๐Ÿ™‚ How about a picture of your car?

  2. I am glad that you are uninjured. Please be aware that there is delayed shock in a collision like this and do not be surprised if your health takes a bit of a dip in a couple of weeks time.
    Take care, Michael

  3. Auw!!!

  4. There is nothing funny in having your car wrecked. You have my sympathy.

  5. I know, and I’ll keep an eye on myself. It isn’t the first time somebody mistakes the back of my car for a place to park, and so far I’ve always been lucky…

  6. Bad Sinterklaas-present for you John. ๐Ÿ™‚
    Glad you are uninjured.

  7. Ouch….
But the main thing you are unhurt. Loosing the car is irrelevant in these cases – although annoying, I have to admit.
