A Dutch court has ruled that “Black Pete” is offensive. How did it take so long?

Yesterday, a court ruled that one of Holland’s much-loved Christmas traditions was “insulting” to black people and perpetuated racist stereotypes. The Amsterdam mayor was given six weeks to decide whether or not he would hold the city’s annual Sinterklaas parade, a Christmas street party.

Like modern versions of Othello, rather than hiring white guys in blackface what about hiring black guys for the job?

  1. It doesn’t matter which color people they hire or what color they are painted (if any) – the basic back story will always retain a racist core, and will continue to be attacked.

Its a part of our rich cultural heritage, just like bull fighting in Spain, or the cringe-inducing origins of Thanksgiving.

Still, a lot of kids will be very unhappy with the current developments.

  2. Re “rich cultural heritage” Do you have space to include the acting out of the symbolic immolation of the catholic conspirator, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605, that we Brits act out every 5th November?

  3. It’s hard to understand why the Pieten can’t be just that, just “Pieten” without having to be black or blackfaced. Rich cultural heritage, my ass.

  4. Penny for the guy, guv?

  5. Remember, remember that Guy in the ember, the religiously driven crackpot? Or is there a reason that what he believed in has quietly been forgot?

  6. Blimey Jim, I thought doggerel was a BBQ ingredient until I met you!
