The only thing holding Japan back from “pearl harbor II: The reharboring” is a local gun law in California.

Google Has Most of My Email Because It Has All of Yours

Despite the fact that I spend hundreds of dollars a year and hours of work to host my own email server, Google has about half of my personal email!

  1. Yeah, I’ve been thinking that for a while. And some further percentage of mail goes to Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.

Christian Homeschool Dads Lust After 17-Year-Old Girl, Get Her Kicked Out of Prom

Posted on May 13th, 2014 at 13:13 by John Sinteur in category: batshitinsane

A 17-year-old homeschool girl, wearing code-appropriate clothing to her homeschool prom, got slut-shamed and kicked out because some middle-aged homeschool dads couldn’t stop ogling her from a balcony.

This is the society those creepy “good Christian” dads want. They’re not much better than the Taliban. They showed self-restraint when they didn’t shoot her in the face, but it’s just a matter of time before she gets death threats from these assholes.

here is her story.

But I cannot help and wonder… was it her dress, or was it her date?

  1. WTF…they let _parents_ into the prom?

  2. The date IMO. Richmond is very much the south and add the home school christian fanaticism to the mix, and you have an explosive mixture. Hopefully she will rebel and see the sham that has been bestowed upon her for so many years.
    @John – Date link broke.

  3. Fixed the link, thx

Average Americans Think They’re Smarter Than the Average American

Posted on May 13th, 2014 at 13:10 by John Sinteur in category: News

Forget being smarter than a fifth-grader. Most Americans think they’re smarter than everyone else in the country.

Fifty-five percent of Americans think that they are smarter than the average American, according to a new survey by YouGov, a research organization that uses online polling. In other words, as YouGov cleverly points out, the average American thinks that he or she is smarter than the average American.

A humble 34 percent of citizens say they are about as smart as everyone else, while a dispirited 4 percent say they are less intelligent than most people.

Men (24 percent) are more likely than women (15 percent) to say they are “much more intelligent” than the average American. White people are more likely to say the same than Hispanic and black people.

  1. People must be feeling down. In Lake Woebegon _all_ the children are above average.

  2. If 55% say they’re smarter than the average, and if the distribution is symmetric and bell-curvey, then only 5% are wrong. And those 34% who think they’re “about as smart” are mostly within one standard deviation, so they’re not really all that wrong either.

Oscar winner: ‘Alien’ creator H.R. Giger is dead

The renowned Swiss artist H.R. Giger has died at the age of 74, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall. Giger, who passed away in a Zurich hospital, was most famous for the alien monster he created for the movie of the same name.

The terrifying creature and sets he created for Ridley Scott’s film earned him an Oscar for special effects in 1980. In the art world, Giger is appreciated for his wide body of work in the fantastic realism and surrealistic genres.

  1. Wonderful vision. I’m not sure if that was the start of mainstream non-sterile SF movies (Dark Star wasn’t mainstream, I’d say).

Glenn Greenwald: how the NSA tampers with US-made internet routers

Posted on May 13th, 2014 at 9:54 by John Sinteur in category: News

But while American companies were being warned away from supposedly untrustworthy Chinese routers, foreign organisations would have been well advised to beware of American-made ones. A June 2010 report from the head of the NSA’s Access and Target Development department is shockingly explicit. The NSA routinely receives – or intercepts – routers, servers and other computer network devices being exported from the US before they are delivered to the international customers.

The agency then implants backdoor surveillance tools, repackages the devices with a factory seal and sends them on. The NSA thus gains access to entire networks and all their users. The document gleefully observes that some “SIGINT tradecraft … is very hands-on (literally!)”.

Eventually, the implanted device connects back to the NSA. The report continues: “In one recent case, after several months a beacon implanted through supply-chain interdiction called back to the NSA covert infrastructure. This call back provided us access to further exploit the device and survey the network.”
