Sochi aquarium set to display killer whales during Olympic Games

Posted on January 29th, 2014 at 22:15 by Paul Jay in category: News

A Sochi aquarium is set to display during the Olympic Games a pair of orcas that were captured by whalers in waters north of Japan, say whale protection advocates.

Killer whale monitoring group Russian Orcas began reporting as early as 2012 that ships were capturing killer whales in the Okhotsk Sea with Sochi’s Aquatoria as a possible destination. Russian officials and staff at the aquarium have been mostly silent about the plans since that time, but with the Olympics just a few weeks away, local whale researchers and thousands of B.C. residents are joining international voices in decrying the move.

An online petition calling for Russia not to display the whales during the Games is gaining momentum. Nearly 100,000 people had signed the online petition by early Friday evening.

“(T)wo wild-caught orcas are being flown in, seemingly in the hopes of making more money during the Winter Olympics,” reads the petition, adding that the “capture and display of orcas causes immense suffering to the whales.”

Aides Advise Obama To Avoid Any Mention Of America During State Of The Union Speech

Posted on January 29th, 2014 at 17:02 by John Sinteur in category: News

Man, how could I miss posting this earlier…

Ahead of Tuesday night’s highly anticipated State of the Union address, top White House aides reportedly sat down with President Barack Obama and advised him to maintain a positive and optimistic tone throughout the speech by avoiding any mention of the United States of America. “We feel it’s best to steer clear of topics that may cast the administration in an unfavorable light, so we urged the president to gently skirt the issue of America and any related subjects for the duration of his address,” said White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, adding that they hoped to deny Republican opponents of any ammunition for their rebuttal by instructing Obama to refrain from talking about the U.S., any one of the 50 states, or the American populace at all. “The country has been a really thorny issue for the president, so given the importance of this occasion and the number of people watching, we recommended that the president just stay away from using any loaded terms that might stir up negative associations with listeners, such as ‘the United States,’ ‘our nation,’ or ‘my fellow Americans.’” White House sources later confirmed that Obama’s State of the Union speech is estimated at seven minutes long and will focus largely on The Rolling Stones’ widely popular 1972 album Exile On Main St.

Republican Congressman threatens to kill reporter after State of the Union

Posted on January 29th, 2014 at 15:19 by John Sinteur in category: batshitinsane

Congressman Michael Grimm (R-NY/Staten Island) felt a little tense after the State of the Union. After giving a terse statement to an NY1 reporter, he was asked about the ongoing issue of his campaign finance. He declined to discuss the matter and stormed off, then returned a moment later, apparently unaware that the camera was still rolling, and threatened to “throw [the reporter] off this fucking balcony.” Grimm followed this with “you’re not man enough, you’re not man enough. I’ll break you in half. Like a boy.”

Grimm’s campaign finance scandal dates to the 2010 election in which he allegedly solicited donations from his major donors for other Republican candidates, who had done the same for him in return — a “donor swap” arrangement that allowed him to skirt fundraising limits. Grimm is under investigation by the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York for this, and for other finance irregularities, including accepting cash donations larger than $100, and for laundering a donation of $25,000 through a third party.

Grimm is a former US Marine who served in Iraq, and then worked for the FBI. While at the Bureau, he was investigated for abusing his authority: threatening his date’s husband (“I’ll fucking make him disappear where nobody will find him”) and pulling a gun in a nightclub. Grimm argued that reports of the incident were a “witch hunt” but the NYPD and FBi refused to release their files on the matter, and the New Yorker reporter who wrote the original story produced supplemental documents supporting his account.

Grimm is a Tea Party darling who was endorsed by Sarah Palin and Rudy Giuliani.
