The economist, 64, and chambermaid Nafissatou Diallo reached the deal to end all legal action for sexual assault against him the US.

The six-figure sum is considerably less than the £3.5 million Mr Strauss-Kahn was earlier reported to have paid Ms Diallo in December, France’s Journal de Dimanche newspaper said.

The 30-year-old chambermaid then paid £320,000 in legal fees, leaving her a settlement of £630,000, the Sunday paper reported.

Mr Strauus-Kahn – once tipped as a future president of France – was arrested in May 2011 for trying to rape Guinea immigrant Miss Diallo when she came to clean his suite in New York’s Sofitel hotel.

He was charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse, a criminal sexual act, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching and held at the city’s notorious Ryker’s Island prison.

So you can just buy your way out of a criminal prosecution?

  1. Nah, they were just negotiating about the price.

  2. No. The criminal prosecution was dismissed long ago because Diallo appeared to have lied about a number of things and had lost credibility to the point where they had no case. This is settling Diallo’s civil suit against DSK. You missed it in the article–it’s in there.

  3. Still you can buy yourself out of a criminal prosecution.
It’s called a settlement. Or legal corruption.

No big U.S. bank — Wells Fargo included — has ever been indicted for violating the Bank Secrecy Act or any other federal law. Instead, the Justice Department settles criminal charges by using deferred-prosecution agreements, in which a bank pays a fine and promises not to break the law again.
    ‘No Capacity to Regulate’
Large banks are protected from indictments by a variant of the too-big-to-fail theory.
